Stress Happens, You Can Help

Beacon Health System and Kohl’s Cares seek to address the 2019-2021 Community and Pediatric Health Need Priority of Mental Health by addressing the following: preventing future mental health problems for children through developing and strengthening resiliency, promoting awareness of depression and anxiety disorders, decreasing the stigma around asking for help, and finally accessing the mental health system.

Managing Stress during COVID-19

We have provided a list of resources to help parents and children cope with stress and uncertainty during Coronavirus. Some of the topics are mindfulness, parenting during the coronavirus, and finding your calm.

THE TRUTH ABOUT STRESS

Stress Happens. It is a part of life.

Some stress is helpful. Being nervous before a test can motivate us to do well.

Stress can overwhelm us, or our kids, causing mental distress and physical illness.

With a little awareness and some strategies, we can cope with stress, and make our lives better.

Truth About Stress
How Do Kids Get Stressed

HOW DO KIDS GET STRESSED?

Kids get stressed the same way adults do. Just like in adults, lots of things in life can cause stress:

  • Demands from schoolwork
  • Bullies or unkind kids at school
  • Worries about family members
  • Neighborhood issues
  • Self-doubt

…and more

Think about: Are there things that stress your child? What are they? Ask your child about it.

WHEN STRESS TAKES CHARGE

We are all born able to cope with some stress.

It is called RESILIENCE.

When stress overwhelms us, life is more difficult. Kids, like adults, show signs when stress is taking over:

  • sadness, worry, or anger
  • stomach aches, headaches, difficulty sleeping
  • poor concentration, sleepiness, or aggression
  • behavior problems
When Stress Takes Charge
Can Stress Make Us Sick?

CAN STRESS MAKE US SICK?

Yes! When we experience stress, our body takes energy from our immune and digestive systems so we have energy to deal with the stress. If you or your child stays stressed all the time, it damages your ability to process food and fight illness.

But WAIT! There is good news! We have a natural health system which will helps us recover.

STRESS HAPPENS: YOU GOT THIS!

We have a natural coping system, which gives us RESILIENCE. To activate it, we need to:

  • Take care of our bodies! Try one or two of these:
    • reducing sugar and caffeine
    • getting sleep
    • doing some physical activity
    • going out for some fresh air
  • Give yourself a break! We all deserve it! See reverse for a toolkit to help you discover what works for you and your child.

Warning: you might just have some fun in the process!
